I have heard someone in one of the forums said that she wished she was a coder and not a programmer coz I presume, it is because there are more job opportunities for coders? (not really sure of)

So, what is the difference between a coder and a programmer?

Hm, looks the same to me except a bit of difference:
Coder: a person who designs and writes and tests computer programs
Programmer:One who writes computer programs. Fans of the art frequently prefer to be called hackers, because the word 'programmer' invokes images of corporate drones in shirts and ties churning out software for accounting companies

Hmm.. are you sure about that Jt ?

I feel that coder is person who is into webdesigns by using asp and php and other languages..

Programmer is the person who makes softwares.

Im eighty percent sure, just from basic knowledge, and i got those definitions off google. But if your saying that coders are the people that do sites, and programmers are the one that does actual programs..i think you got it, but then again im not sure :P

Thanks, JT and kartik, both terms are more or less related the difference is that programmers really make softwares or writes computer programs while a coder is somebody who is into webdesigning, right? :)

Yep... coders are also known as script kiddies...

Script kiddies Originated when coders started exploiting the webservers and started hacking into ... by use of various malicous codes in javascript and other languages.

My husband and I like to say that he's the programmer and I'm the coder/scripter, but that's just to say that he actually programs in compiled languages, like C++, and makes actual stand-alone applications; whereas I'm all about the instant gratification of interpreted languages, like PHP, used to make dynamic webpages.

Maybe not the accepted terminology, but it's how the distinction gets made when we talk informally.

Thanks, now I have an idea of what 'they' were talking about, whatever terms, they come in handy every now and then :)

Basic English grammar tells me that a programmer is one who programs, and a coder is one who codes. But what the differences might be, I have no idea. :-)
