host is specific space of a server that given by the server owner so you can use it for making a web site ,store your files,upload,download so you should first have a FTP account to upload files to the server(your host)but you can even download files via HTTP protocol
you may not be able to change the server settings because you are given a specific space of the server for specific time period it's like rent a room of a house.

so the shared means you share your host among two or more people so they can upload the files via FTP protocol to the server they looks like an admin but not a super admin to change the settings that directly affected to your host, that's why you may need a content management system like Joomla to manage your website if it is shared(if two or more people can modify the website).
