Photoshop help??? Please...?

I have Photoshop Elements 6, and I have a wonderful (not really) drawing of the Akatsuki celebrating Christmas. In black and white. And it'd look a lot better in color. On the toolbar on the side of the Photoshop screen, the very lest icon is a black square on top on a white one. I clicked on that to try and select the color, but it wouldn't let me. I selected the color fine (it was a dark redish color, for Sasori-no-Danna's hair.), but when I tried to color his hair in it colored it gray instead.
Is it Photoshop being mean, or is it just me being dumb??? Please help!!! (NO spam answers. I will report you.)

Your problem COULD be that you are set in the wrong mode. To change modes, go to image, then mode, and if it is selected as grayscale, change it to "RGB color".
