SEO Pet Peeve!

OK, so is this legitimate SEO?

When you do a Google search for something, and the top link goes to a page that has NOTHING TO DO with what you're searching for, and hasn't really any content at all except for ALL THE SEARCH ENGINE PHRASES THE DESIGNER COULD THINK OF in hopes of luring traffic to the site to look at his advertisements?

I hate, hate, HATE that.

I use Google a LOT to research topics I'm paid to write about, and nothing's worse than pulling that all-nighter before deadline day and finding nothing but these dang "gotcha" Google hits when what I need is INFORMATION!!!!

Yes, it's a pet peeve. Really. Sorry to, er, dribble a bit there.

You people what know about SEO and all, is this legit in your eyes? Is this at all defensible? Am I just old-fashioned in my internethics?

it's legit, but it's not ethical nor polite - it's just a pain in the butt when people prize their search engine over getting the information to the consumer.

Yes, it certainly is a pain! SEO could be such a great thing, but like every other good thing, someone usually comes along to ruin it. :(
