Is DMOZ really worth anything in terms of search engine optimization? It doesn't seem that Yahoo or Google put all that much credence in it.

I definately disagree here. I see that both yahoo and google give high credence to sites on the DMOZ. You also will see that google lists sites from the DMOZ at the header sometimes when you type in a keyword.

Dmoz rocks.. for the single reason that there are lot of clone sites using dmoz listing as their own..

Once you get listed under a category in dmoz.. you automatically get listed in numerous other directories ;)

If you get your website listed in DMOZ, you will get listed in many directories worldwide! It’s a must for every website if you want a good ranking for your website in search results.

May I sound like an idiot for a moment and ask what DMOZ is?

It is Open Directory Project. Check: http://www.dmoz.com/

Ahhh, I see. Many thanks. So far, the general consensus in this thread seems to be that it's worth it? Are there any downsides to using it that I don't know about?

I know of few:
1. Takes more than a month for your website to finally appear on search engines after you have submitted your website.
2. Sometimes it’s very difficult to get your website listed with them.

However, no disadvantage of getting listed with them.

I wouldn't mind waiting, as long as search engines weren't going to blacklist me for putting my site there or anything! :-D

One good thing about the MSN search engine is that when a site is listed in DMOZ MSN adds it right away
