...a Windows XP Host and A windows 7 Client? I have tried everything, but the client will not connect to the net. I have the internet connection sharing bot checked on the wireless network I'm trying to share, and the client computer is set to automatically receive an IP. The client computer reports a various number of issues, and when I tell it to repair the connection it says to investigate router or broadband issues. The internet also occasionally works for one or two minute periods.

The host computer is connected perfectly.

Any help is greatly appreciated.
Oh, and it says that the LAN does not have a valid IP configuration.
The client computer says this, not the host.

Change the name of the workgroup on both computers to the same name.

On xp, click on start -> right click on my computer -> select properties -> select the computer name tab -> click on the change domain or workgroup name button and change the name of the workgroup (Don't change the computer name)

Windows 7

Control Panel --- System and Security --- System

Click 'Advanced system settings'

Click 'Computer Name' tab

Click 'Change'

Type desired workgroup name

Click OK

Reboot

Make sure that XP and 7 have the same workgroup name e.g.netgroup or whatever other name you choose.

Remove ipv6 from the windows 7 computer.
