...Maintenance"? I have always wondered what is actually repaired or looked at during a Server Maintenance and why it takes so long.

Could be many things. A hardware upgrade. Software patches that require a reboot. Moving the server physically.

It could also be something like replacing the switch the server is plugged into or working on the power or cooling that requires the server to be shut off.

whenever I ask for a maintenance window it will be at least 50% longer than the time I actually think it will take since if you say it will be an hour and something goes wrong, no one ever cares that there was a problem, they are just outraged that your estimate was incorrect.
