Who knows? Maybe selling signature lines is the next big advertising portal. You've heard of people who are getting paid to plaster advertisements on their cars, haven't you?

true... but I'm wondering if anyone actually READS it... I mean, if it's not relevant to the topic - who's going to get it?

You have a point, Thumper. Signature links must be relevant to the forum one is joining.

I've used several sig lines over the years, my fave being "I have a mind like a steel...thingmabob...you know...doohickey."

However, the Sloganizer (http://www.sloganizer.net/en)is a fun place for sig lines. :) and it's free.

ah, but if it promotes, say.... socks, does it sell any socks when you're posting on a computer programming site?

I have my doubts whether a sig line is going to drum up a great deal of business unless you post only in forums which are related to your business. And after all, many people post in a variety of forums, whether business, hobby or personal interest types. I've visited site links in sig lines, but I've never ever bought anything from someone's site.

The only time I got any business from my signature, it was someone who followed it to my blog and liked my writing style and wanted to pay me to blog (yay!) but didn't really have any use for the real person behind the blog (boo!). He wanted me to pretend to be a HOT SEXY BABE!!1!!!!!1!!! ... but he didn't bother to make that clear, so my real name was on my posts, but suddenly any mention of my real life and my family he was editing out.

I might have done it if he'd been clear up front. I'd have taken a pseudonym and enjoyed the heck out of it. But this guy couldn't ever say anything straight--everything was like "Hey maybe if you posed topless next to a gaming computer, nudge nudge ha ha LOL." It took me forever to realize that despite all the "ha ha LOL" he wasn't joking. And by then my real name was on all my posts AND a supermodel type bio photo he dug up from somewhere and plastered under my byline. Bah.

So... that's my experience with the Wonderful World Of .Sig Advertising.
