This is how it works:

A domain expires
It is given 6 to 15 days before deletion
30 day redemption period
6 to 15 days to swing back out in to the public.

At most you could be waiting two months for the entire process to complete. Be careful of cyber squatters, these people are really good at buying previously expired domains and selling them back to the original owner and an outrageous price.

After 30 days redemption period , you cant expect that will be available for a new registrant. Registrar may aquire that domain ,if they are interested, and may auction that to public.
Many registrars do this , as this is a good revenue source for them
