Depending on how simple I would suggest maybe doing a power point slide and printing it out.

If you have MS Office, did it come with Publisher? Otherwise it's easy enough to add images to Word or similar.

Actually you can do it in any Word program or even Word Pad.

If you're wanting to add some other stuff I recommend Paint.Net. It's a great little program and much easier than Photoshop.

If you're wanting to get kids involved with the poster and let them make things for it I highly recommend Tux Paint program.

They're both free and great little programs to mess around with.

Try Adobe Photoshop.
http://www.adobe.com
You can download a trial version for 30 days free.
If you need help learning photoshop, you can search for tutorials. Some photoshop tutorial sites include: http://good-tutorials.com , http://pixel2life.com , or you can look for tutorials on the Adobe website.

or

You can just use MS Paint.
Click on the start tab --> All Programs --> Accessories --> Paint.
Tip: To create straight lines, just click and hold down the shift key (this applies to almost every graphic program). :)

Microsoft Publisher should do the trick. It is in Microsoft Office 2003, at least it is on my computer, and I have had great luck making all kinds of posters. I am 63 years old, so it can't be that hard to figure out.

It sounds like you might be new at this, so here is some additional information that may help you understand what others have already said.

Create a new document in MS Word and type in whatever text you want on the poster.

Use Paint (or other program of your choice) to create the image or images you want on the poster.

Once the images have been created, you can copy and paste each one individually into your Word document.

If you have more than one image, putting them into a table (without borders) makes it easy to position them on the page.

You may have to do a little experimenting to get exactly what you want.

Hope this helps.
