I just read a question about domain parking. The answer said you had to pay for a domain name. Who do you pay? Is there somebody out there who is selling names he/she never owned in the first place? Isn't a domain name the same as a url. So if I wanted a website to be called hgiahgiahgia.com, I'd have to pay somebody for that silly name. Would I? Please explain?

Yes is the simple answer and there are lots of companies out there that sell them. I used lycos for buying my addresses. Shop around as prices can vary greatly. No name is silly if its the name you want therefore they are all valuable to the right person/company.

A proper domain name (URL) cost money.
Free ones like webalias.com are unprofessional.

You have to pay a webmaster for that name. A webmaster is a site or person who can "create" and host your site, but it will nearly always cost you. Yahoo offers one that looks like a pretty good deal. Good luck!

Yes. Geocities makes you pay a certan amount of money. But you still have the option of just using your Yahoo name as your sites domain name. If you intend on making a website you can use my website for ideas.

You do need to pay for a domain name but you don't have to pay a lot. GoDaddy has the best deal for Domain Name (1.99) and hosting (variable).
