I would say it is absolutely good to learn a basic level of SEO. Big money has some hold but you would be amazed at how few people understand even the most basic level of SEO.

At some point you would probably want to hire someone who is an expert in SEO but even doing it yourself i would say you should jump in.

SEO is basically just properly telling search engines what your about. Even at a base level it can be extremely effective.
