...photography with photoshop? I'm looking for more information on the use applying filters and rendering effects rather than a book that just tells you how to point and shoot a camera and load into adobe bridge. And more info on camera raw...

There are two books written for photographers using Photoshop CS (II).
Coincidentally they are both called about the same thing. "Photoshop for Photographers" and Adobe Photoshop CS for Photographers" by Martin Evening.
Both do a great job of walking the photographer through the many processes photographers are called upon to do using Photoshop.
Take a stroll through Barns and Noble or Borders and look at both of them. One will "speak" to you as the one to buy.

I really like the Photoshop WOW books written by Linnea Dalton and Jack Davis. They give you lots of advice on using and applying filters, layering effects, paint brush effects etc. The one I have shows steps on creating looks like marble, glass, and metal using assorted filters. You can also see some art from know digital artists. They really show you step by step how to get the look you want. The books are published by Peachpit Press, and usually come with a disk with actions and layered images on it. They are available on line, but check Barnes and Noble too.
See my sites to take a look at how I utilized some of these effects: http://www.pencilsandpixelsart.com http://www.nihwebdesign.com
I actually just went to the library the other day and checked out a whole bunch! So far, the one I like best is called, "Photoshop Made Easy" by Nick Sullivan. The cover says that it uses Photoshop 7, CS, CS2 and Photoshop Elements. I know there are tons of books out there. You can do like the other answer said and check out your local bookstores, but don't forget the library too!
