I used to be able to select the appropriate layer by clicking on the image. i.e. when clicking on a certain part of an image, the corresponding layer would automatically be slected. It suddenly has stopped doing it and i dont know how to get that function back.
i use photoshop 7
my image has 40 layers.
i want the relavant layer to highlight on the layer window when i click on the image. (i.e each object on my image has a layer, an d i find it difficult to remember which layer each belongs to.
ema has given me the answer. click the auto select box when on the move tool. THANK yOU

You just need to bring up the Layers Window by either:

Window\ Layers

or pressing F7

I believe that on the right side of the window..
there is a Layer Window.. where you can select the layers that you have created.
(My layer window was defaulted to the right side.. so your's might be different)

Goto the winodws menu and check to see that the Layer window is selected.

first check if the file you have opened has layers.
if the file merged it will not have layers.
if there is a layer then you can select the layer button in the task or tool bar.

You can use the Layers Window to manage the layers. You can access it from the Window menu if it is not displayed

When you have the move tool selected (the black arrow), make sure you have "Auto Select Layers" ticked (at the top). Hope this helps.
