transparent? I am creating an image in Adobe Photoshop and I cannot remember how to make the white in a black and white photo transparent so that you can see the second layer (a colored layer) behind it, but still have the black and shades of grey remain. If anyone can give me some input that would be great! (anything but the eraser tool)

If I am not mistaken(been a while here too), as long as you have it in bitmap format, when you go to save the file, there is an option called "Transparent Whites". Check that and save. after that you should be good to go

Make a duplicate of the original layer. Place the coloured layer in between. On the duplicate layer, use magic wang click on white area you want to show the coloured layer behind. Delete the area selected. Sometimes you have to work on the delete area without losing too much details.

Select all the image ... copy ... go to file --> new ... choose transparent background, paste, delete the areas you want to appear transparent, be selecting them using the magic wand. save the file as gif or png (to preserve transparency).
