The advantage to backups id it is a one step restore process when system crashes. However i reccomend just backing up your data and in the event of a crash re-install all programs then the data. As far media to back up on you could use floppy, cd, or even flash drives. Also an external hard drive might be the answer.

You would want to back up your system incase of crashes or computer failure. The main technique for backing up is to have a large external harddrive, that way one can fit all their data on it and have it ready incase of system crash.
There are three main types:
Magnetic-
Hardrives (external and internal), floppy disc drives, certain MP3 players.
Advantages-usually very large storage, reliable, fast, easily re-writable
Disadvantages- Can break easily, often large and heavy.
Flash-
USB sticks, certain MP3 players
Advantages- Light and compact form of storage, tough to roucg handling
Disadvantages- Generally small storage, can be rather slow.
Laser Disc-
CDs and DVDs
Advantages- Light, easy to carry.
Disadvantages- Not very large, easy to scratch and ruin, difficult for to rewrite
