There is a lot of interest in alternative frameworks to Java. One of them is Ruby On Rails.

Does it have the potential to take Java by it's horns?

Can it's Framework get as large as J2EE?
Will it get as much support from all major IT vendors as J2EE?

I doubt that it'll over take Java. If it did, it would have already happened, as Ruby on Rails has been out for a relatively long time. Java is just too entrenched in terms of infrastructure and support.

The answer might be, "It depends." Ruby on Rails is a framework for building a particular kind of web application. Java is a general purpose programming language. So perhaps a more interesting question might be will Ruby overtake Java? It doesn't seem very likely, but then why does it matter? If Ruby works for whatever programming project you're involved with then use it.
