Ive formed an image with two layers, I know you can flatten the image and then clone/smudge for blending. Is there a way to blend like this with layers?

In your layers tab, there will be a drop down list right under the tab "Layers". It should be set at Normal right now. You can play with those layer blending options.

Also, double-click the layer or right-click --> Blending Options and play around in there.

There are many ways to do things in Photoshop but since I don't know exactly what you want I can't be specific.

Pressing F1 or going to help will bring up Photoshop help. From there you can look up everything about Photoshop. Tutorialized.com and Good-Tutorials.com have some really good tutorials on how to make textures, text effects, .etc.
