Is this a good career to go for anymore? It seems that a lot of people do it, so is there still chance for someone to make good money at it? What sort of skills are needed to be a web designer? Is anyone a web designer who can offer some info? Do you have to be artistic or does it just require programming knowledge?

Web designing can be done either through programming or designing or both. If you are good at designing that will be a benefit although you will need to know at least basic knowledge of programming.
The career is still good as new technologies keep coming out and people need more programmers for web-based technologies.
If you want to start off your career in this field, then first learn HTML http://w3schools.com
You should also play around with basic web designing softwares like frontpage and dreamweaver to develop the know-how or more advanced ones like ASP.Net.
